Category:CinderellaTargeting the mTOR pathway in cancer: "from roadblocks to opportunities".
The mTOR signaling pathway is essential for the regulation of cell growth and metabolism in response to environmental cues and nutrients, and is frequently hyperactivated in human cancer. Aberrant activation of mTOR induces cell-cycle arrest and apoptosis, while reduced mTOR signaling results in uncontrolled proliferation and oncogenesis. Here we summarize recent advances in our understanding of the mTOR pathway and discuss the potential of targeting mTOR in cancer therapy. Targeting the mTOR pathway could provide effective treatment for several cancer types by re-engaging the potent tumor suppression function of the pathway and, by reducing the dependence of tumor cells on mTOR signaling, enhancing the efficacy of other therapeutic modalities.Tuesday, October 23, 2006
One more for the road
I am leaving for the USA tomorrow morning. Very excited about the trip, but I am not looking forward to going through customs at JFK in a few hours. This is because I am prohibited from taking any food or beverage with me. Too easy to smuggle.
The only things I will be allowed to take are the following:
laptops
ipods
documents
my glasses
a small quantity of medicine (a day or two's supply)
books
books, toiletries, or toilet paper in Ziploc bag
. For the laptop, ipod, and lenses, I can take any one of them in my carry-on, as long as they fit in the standard size box that fits in the overhead bin. It is about 10 inches by 9.5 inches by 13 inches. If the item is in its original box, that will be fine. However, if it comes in its packaging, the airline cannot allow you to bring it out of its packaging. They will not even allow you to open the packaging, so be sure to take the item out of its packaging.
No liquids, gels, etc. But the airlines can't inspect the liquids for you, so be sure to take out whatever you plan on putting in your bag.
